Rachael Sleight Talk

It was interesting for me to hear Rachael’s talk as it relates in some ways to my own plans for after uni. It was useful to hear about the realities of setting up a small business making bespoke items as this is the direction I would like to take. It has become clear to me that design would only be one aspect of this career path, as it would also be a career in business and entrepreneurship, which I think adds an extra level of control over the design process, while also expanding the range of responsibilities. I liked her strategy of having sample pieces made up, both for the benefit of the consumer, and to outline a “house style”. In addition, it made me think about other directions I could take. Rachael mentioned that she still works between organisations, lecturing at GSA and doing material research documents. It would be interesting to work like this as I think this more varied field of knowledge could add depth and new methods to my own process.
