Sebastian Cox’s workshop produces high quality furniture using exclusively British hardwood. Every inch of the wood is used, and pieces that are too small to be used for furniture are used to make small home products, such as candle holder, dishes, pen holders, and towel racks. This range of products is called Offcuts. This is a positive step from a sustainability perspective in that it shows off the beauty of the materials all around us, and rejects the common idea that materials have to be exotic to be luxurious. The pieces are fairly simple and sometimes blur the line between rustic and modern, as in the crown candelabra and in the Spray hooks towel rack. The wood used for the Offcuts range would normally go to waste or be burned, but by processing it into quality products significant financial value can be added to the material.
